Stainless steel 316LN (UNS S31653) is a nitrogen-enhanced Type 316 stainless steel version. It contains higher levels of molybdenum and nitrogen, which offer improved resistance to both general corrosion and pitting/crevice corrosion; its composition typically consists of 18.00–20.00% chromium, 11.00–14.50% nickel, 2.75–3.5% molybdenum, 0.38–0.45% carbon as well as an addition of nitride to achieve a minimum nitrogen content of 0..2%. This combination makes it ideal for use in extreme chloride ion environments or when high mechanical strength is needed, such as aerospace infrastructure components or chemical processing equipment operating under highly corrosive conditions in petrochemical plants or power plants.
Stainless Steel 316LN is a stainless steel alloy that combines excellent mechanical properties like high strength, toughness and good corrosion resistance with a comparatively low thermal expansion coefficient. It is generally used in highly corrosive environments due to its superior pitting resistance compared to other types of stainless steel. Additionally, it has superior oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, making it the ideal material for applications such as chemical processing plants and medical equipment parts.
