Aluminium 5083 is an alloy of aluminium, magnesium, and manganese with excellent corrosion resistance and higher strength than 5052 or 5005. The alloying elements in this material give it good weldability characteristics, as well as excellent formability and machinability. Its composition includes 4-4.9% magnesium and 0.6-1.2% manganese; the balance is aluminium (typically 97%). It also contains small amounts of chromium, silicon, copper and other elements that impart additional strength to the material. This versatile alloy can be used for cold working processes, such as stamping and bending applications, or hot working processes, like welding, making it suitable for various engineering tasks!
Aluminium 5083 is a medium-strength, non-heat treatable alloy with excellent corrosion resistance and weldability. It is one of the most popular alloys in marine applications due to its high strength-to-weight ratio, formability, and superior corrosion resistance compared to other aluminium alloys. Additionally, it can be used for various fabrication projects that require greater strength than that offered by 1xxx series aluminium alloys. Aluminium 5083 is also used extensively in cryogenics for cryogenic vessels, piping systems, and aerospace applications such as aircraft fuel tanks, missile components, and satellite structures.
